Project summary:

The project "Stone by Stone – Roads of the Fortresses" introduces an integrated approach to promoting cultural heritage in the cross-border region between Bulgaria and Serbia. At its heart lies the belief that culture and tourism know no administrative boundaries – instead, they create natural links between people, places, and stories.

Thanks to the strong partnership between the cities of Montana and Pirot, and their shared ambition to foster development through culture, the project will enhance the region’s tourism potential. The two fortresses – in Montana and Pirot – will be renovated and presented as connected elements within a broader cultural-historical route. This initiative is not merely about developing a tourist destination, but about offering a meaningful experience that brings together history, traditions, crafts, and modern technology.

A key component of the project is the creation of an innovative virtual application titled "Stone by Stone – Roads of the Fortresses." It will offer users an interactive journey from Pirot to Montana, including other sites important to the region’s cultural identity – such as museums, craft workshops, natural landmarks, and culinary and tourism spots. Visitors will not only be informed but inspired to explore the route in real life.

The project also foresees the development of a web-based audio-visual guide for the Montana fortress, making visits more engaging and informative. In addition, a digital platform will be launched to connect institutions, organizations, craftspeople, and tourism stakeholders. This platform will foster collaboration, support the promotion of local services, and boost economic activity in the region.

One of the project’s strengths is its potential for expansion – both the app and the platform can be continuously enriched with new locations and partners related to the region’s cultural and natural assets, even across different sectors. This makes the initiative a living system that evolves with community needs and visitor interests.

"Stone by Stone – Roads of the Fortresses" builds on previous investments in cultural infrastructure but goes far beyond them. It demonstrates how joint efforts and innovative digital tools can support a sustainable model of cultural tourism – one that strengthens the local economy, promotes social cohesion, and creates new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

The project is yet another example of how cross-border cooperation programmes connect not only territories, but also people, values, and shared futures.
