On 31 March 2026, the deadline for submitting applications under the Second Call for project proposals for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) under the Interreg VI-A Bulgaria–Serbia Programme 2021–2027 came to a close.
A total of 44 project proposals were submitted by Bulgarian and Serbian enterprises planning to implement joint cross-border investments focused on enhancing competitiveness and achieving sustainable growth. The strong interest in the call is also the result of a targeted information campaign, including events and meetings with business representatives from both sides of the border, aimed at fostering partnerships and supporting the preparation of project proposals.
The submitted projects cover a wide range of economic activities, with several key areas clearly emerging. There is significant interest in the modernisation of production processes through the introduction of new equipment and automation, including in the furniture, metal-processing and food industries. Some applicants also focus on digitalisation and the implementation of innovative solutions, ranging from intelligent management and logistics systems to developments based on artificial intelligence.
A strong emphasis is also placed on the development of logistics and transport services, including solutions for cold chain and green logistics, as well as integrated approaches to sustainable tourism and the creation of joint cross-border tourism products. In the health sector, projects foresee investments in modern medical equipment, the introduction of new diagnostic technologies, and the development of joint services for prevention and rehabilitation.
There is also notable interest in projects focused on the circular economy, energy efficiency and waste reduction, as well as on the creation of joint brands and value chains, for example in the production of traditional foods and beverages.
Some of the project proposals combine multiple areas, such as production modernisation, digitalisation and the implementation of sustainable solutions, indicating a shift towards more comprehensive business development and more effective use of cross-border cooperation opportunities.
In line with the requirements of the call, all project proposals have been developed in partnership between enterprises from both sides of the border and include investment activities, with at least 60% of the budget allocated to tangible investments.
The evaluation process of the submitted project proposals is now forthcoming and will be carried out in accordance with the approved quality and compliance criteria. Within the available budget of the call, approximately 10 projects are expected to be approved for funding, with an implementation period of 12 to 24 months.
The Second Call for SMEs confirms the strong interest of businesses in cross-border cooperation and investment opportunities, as well as their commitment to seeking joint solutions to enhance their competitiveness in the region.
