Sometimes a journey begins long before the first turn of the pedals.
With the launch of the Timok–Danube Cycling platform, cycling enthusiasts can now do more than simply plan their routes – they can experience them in advance through a video series available in Bulgarian, Serbian and English.
The video series is part of project BGRS0200069 “Timok–Danube Cycling”, funded with nearly €927,000 under the Interreg VI-A IPA Bulgaria–Serbia 2021–2027 Programme.
At the heart of the project is the ambition to establish the region between Vidin and Zaječar as a cycling tourism destination, where new routes, digital tools and infrastructure investments make travelling easier to plan and more accessible to visitors.
The virtual journey takes viewers through some of the most fascinating natural, cultural and historical landmarks in the cross-border region between Vidin District and Zaječar District. The videos showcase not only the routes themselves, but also the places, people and stories that travellers can discover along the way.
One of the featured videos follows the Knjaževac–Belogradchik route – a journey spanning more than two millennia of history. The route begins in Knjaževac, known as the town of seven bridges, passes through the archaeological site of Ravna and the Suvodol Monastery, and after crossing the border leads visitors to some of the most iconic landmarks of Northwestern Bulgaria. From Roman military camps and archaeological sites to medieval monasteries and some of Bulgaria’s most distinctive natural formations, the route reveals the region’s diversity in a way that is difficult to appreciate from a map or travel guide alone.
The video series allows future visitors to familiarise themselves with the routes in advance, discover new places to explore and gain a better understanding of the experiences that await them along the way. In this way, planning a trip becomes part of the adventure itself.
